Clay soil can be very hard to work with, and you will often find that it sticks to the shovel. To make working in clay easier, rub the shovel with floor or car wax and then buff it with a cloth. By waxing the shovel head, the clay will not be able to adhere to the surface.
Make sure to pre-soak seeds, preferably in a dark location. Place a small amount of seeds in a little container, while filling it to the brim with water. The seeds will get the hydration they need to start growing. The seeds will now have a greater chance of maturing and surviving.
Take care of your knees while working in the garden. Bending over while gardening can be painful and unhealthy for your back. Kneeling down on the ground is a more comfortable way for many people to tend to their gardening chores. You can get a knee pad to place on the ground to kneel on so that you do not feel pain in your knees.
Put money into a quality wheelbarrow and kneeling stool if you plan to do garden work often. You can make gardening much more comfortable on your knees by using a portable garden stool. It is also normal to move heavy objects and dirt around the garden, so a wheelbarrow is something you should have.
To give them a boost, pour out any leftover water from steaming or boiling vegetables on the plants or soil around them. It is also possible to utilize coffee ground or tea to make the soil more acidic for gardenias, rhododendrons and other plants that prefer acidic soil. If you find that you have a fungus problem, try sprinkling some chamomile tea on your plants.
When gardening, be watchful of stink bugs, particularly in the fall. Fruits, peppers and tomatoes are among the foods they love to eat. If not taken care of, these pests can damage the garden, so take steps to cut down their population.
Learn the best harvest time for each vegetable. Different vegetables have different, ideal times that they should be picked for best flavor. For example, some plants, such as zucchini and baby peas, have the most flavor when harvested while young. Let your tomatoes, however, linger on the vine until they are fully ripe. So, find out the best time to harvest your vegetables.
When fall arrives, it’s time to plant your autumn vegetables. This year, instead of using your regular clay pots to plant your kale and lettuce, use a pumpkin as the container instead! Once you’ve cut its top and scooped the insides out, spray the edges and inside with Wilt-Pruf to prevent rotting. After you have finished this, you will be ready to start planting.
All that is required is a little research, patience, and putting in some work time out in the garden itself. But soon you will see the work begin to pay off, as the garden begins to grow.
