Gardening Advice For A Healthy And Beautiful Garden

The best way to start a garden is from first principles: seeds. Starting with your own seeds is more environmentally friendly than buying plants from a nursery. The plastic used in nurseries often end up in landfills, that is why it is advised to use seeds or purchase from nurseries that make use of organic materials when packaging their plants.

Brighten your garden with biennials and annuals. You can use biennial and annual flowers to brighten the bed, and let you change how it looks. They can make a handy, gap-filler between shrubs and perennials located in sunny areas. Notable collections include sunflower, marigold, hollyhock, rudbeckia, cosmos, and petunia.

Both cat grass and wheat grass are good for giving your errant feline pause. Offensive smells also work to repel cats and other pesky animals from eating your plants. Try putting mothballs, citrus peels, garlic and other pungent items on the topsoil.

You can easily build up plan material layers for compost by filling large garbage bags with the material. This is best done in autumn after you rake up all the leaves in your backyard. Bag the leaves, then store them in a warm location. Come spring time, you will be ready to compost the leaves, which creates ready-made soil.

Choose plants that will provide color in autumn. However, you can still maintain your gardening hobby throughout the fall months. The fall season is probably the most colorful of the year in terms of foliage. For example, maple, beech, and dogwood trees all change from their usual green to a vibrant spectrum of yellow, orange, and red. Shrubs such as barberry, cotoneaster and hydrangea all have gorgeous fall foliage.

The handles on your gardening tools can be used as a convenient measuring instrument. Tools that can be used for more than one task are quite handy to own. Put the handles down and measure them with a measuring tape. Label the distances with a permanent marker. Now when you go garden the next time, you’ll have a giant ruler at your command.

Always have a plan for the garden prior to the start of planting it. It will be easy to remember where each plant is when sprouts start to shoot up the following spring. You are also less likely to lose smaller members of the larger garden in the overall mix.

When you are gardening out in the sun, wear the proper clothing so that you do not get any type of sun damage. Make sure you wear a wide brimmed hat along with sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen. When you protect yourself against the sun’s rays, you are more likely to avoid both skin cancer and sunburn.

Remarkably, there are some annual plants that do even better in the cold weather months. To keep these plants looking their best prune them back if they have become too leggy. Following the pruning, it generally takes only a couple weeks before blooming occurs again, which creates a lovely image compared to the traditional foliage of the winter months. For those colder month, you may want to try snapdragons, various petunia plants, or even the sturdy dianthus.

Apply the wisdom of the preceding paragraphs to return vigor and vibrancy to your garden. You’ll be so happy to see your beautiful plants afterward. Gardening can literally change your life, but only if you put in the effort and do it!
