Try to plant some larger plants during fall to encourage some strong root development. The ground is somewhat warm when compared to the temperature of the air, and the plants are stripped of their leaves, the root system can get all of the plant’s resources and create a strong foundation.
You can get new plants from root cuttings. Cutting roots should be done in the winter while the plant is dormant. Using a sharp knife, remove the most thick and long roots off the plant. Divide the roots into vertical segments of about two inches. Place the cuttings on top of a seed tray that you have filled with a blend of damp peat and grit. You will then place out a thinner layer of the peat mixture on top of the cuttings. Leave it in a cold place, and you’ll have new seedlings in a month. Plant them separately inside of small pots until it is time to plant them outdoors.
Clay soil can be very hard to work with, and you will often find that it sticks to the shovel. To make digging clay soil easier, try applying a light coating of wax, either car wax or floor wax, and then buff off and commence digging. The clay will slide off of its surface and it will prevent rust.
A good way to ensure that your seeds sprout effectively is to start them in smaller pots and then transplant them once they reach the seedling stage. Your plants will be more likely to survive if you do this. It also lets you have tighter control over the planting periods in your garden. After you remove the mature plants from your garden, you can immediately replace them with the seedlings and start the cycle over again.
Make sure to be weary of stink bugs whenever you garden, particularly during the fall months. Stink bugs enjoy gardens, and are especially fond of fruit, tomatoes, beans and peppers. If you don’t treat them, they can do a lot of damage in your garden.
Plants need to take in CO2 to grow and thrive. The majority of plants grow much better when CO2 levels are at their highest. Growing plants in a greenhouse is the best way to contain CO2 for use by your plants. A greenhouse will help maintain a high level of CO2 and cause the plants to grow faster.
Boiling away unwanted weeds is an odd, but productive method used in many gardens. A pot of very hot water is one of the most effective ways you can get rid of the weeds in your garden. Carefully pour boiling water right on the weeds, but be careful not to pour it on the plants you want. The roots of the weeds are damaged by the boiling water which, in turn, inhibits further growth.
