Find out more about creating a great garden. Here you will find out the basic equipment and general techniques that are used in gardening so that your efforts are effective and efficient.

When you are gardening, it is important to know how much water your plants need. You could cause your plants to rot or your soil to dry if you do not use the right amount of water. Check the moisture level of your plants often to keep the soil as moist as necessary.

A good green garden should start from seeds and not plants. The most “green” way to create a new garden is starting from seeds. It’s better for your garden, in particular, because transplants have high failure rates; whereas, sprouting a seed and growing a plant in the same conditions is better. Additionally, it’s better for the environment, because the plastic pots used by most greenhouses are generally not recycled and are cluttering landfills.

Shoveling clay soil is tiresome since clay is hard, and it can also stick to your shovel for twice the difficulty. To make the clay soft so you aren’t working as hard, take floor or car wax and rub a light coat on the surface of the shovel using a clean cloth, then buff the surface. This causes the clay to slide rather than stick, and prevents rust as a side effect.

Take care of your knees while working in the garden. Bending over from a standing position is something many people cannot do. If you kneel, you can easily work on your plants without placing stress on your back. Knee pads will prevent any pain you may feel because of this position.

Plan out your vegetable garden on paper. List what you want grown and create a detailed drawing off the area and where everything will be planted. Consider variables like width at maturity, moisture, required sunlight and plant height.

Do you love fresh mint leaves but hate how they quickly grow to take over your garden? Control their expansion by confining them to a large pot. If you prefer, you can even place the container in the ground, but the pot’s walls will prevent the mint from spreading and being a nuisance in your garden.

Plant heather to attract beneficial insects. Heather is quite alluring to bees; when spring comes along, it provides the bees with a source of nectar early. Spiders, ground beetles, and other useful insects spend time in undisturbed heather beds. With this knowledge at hand, it is in your best interest to wear gloves when tending the heather.

Though you can often place houseplants into new pots, some varieties will not do well if you disrupt the roots. To see if a plant should be re-potted, turn it upside down, tap the bottom of the container and see if it falls out. If a lot of roots are visible, use a new pot. Though if there are no roots showing, or only a few, your plant is fine and there is no need to re-pot it.

When you plan your garden, pick the vegetables your family uses the most and plant those. That way, you’ll be the most excited about using the plants you grow, and save some money on groceries. If your family doesn’t eat a certain type of vegetable, don’t bother growing it, as it’s just a waste of space.

Are you ready to do some research, do some work outside, and be patient? However, while you watch something grow that you planted, the satisfaction will make it worthwhile.
