You can keep bugs out of your organic garden by planting garlic in different areas. Most insects are repelled by its odor. You want to plant these especially around the perimeter, as well as near those plants prone to insect damage. And, one extra plus from planting garlic is that it’s edible.

A rule of thumb for when you are planting seeds in containers is to make the hole depth around three times larger than the seed itself. There are exceptions to this rule, however. Some seeds should remain uncovered because they thrive in direct sunlight. Two common examples of this type of seed are ageratum and petunias. Always be sure to check online or with the company you’re purchasing the seeds from as to their sunlight needs.

Mulch is a great water conservation tool; it allows you to save water while you are gardening. A greater amount of mulch means less frequent watering of the garden. It could be from the store, from dead plant materials, or from pieces of trees. Make sure to use a large amount of mulch.

Any time you use fresh vegetables in your cooking, take a moment after your meal preparation to finely chop any excess pieces and place them in your garden. These vegetable pieces will quickly begin to decay, leeching vital nutrients directly into your new growing plants. Of course, if you have a large amount of vegetable scraps, you should compost them in a compost heap, but small amounts of scraps can go directly to the soil.

If aphids are an issue in your garden, try the old-fashioned remedy of soapy water to get rid of them. Make sure to spray the whole plant including leaves, buds and stems with the soapy water mixture and rinse by spraying with clean water.

Ruffle the seedlings carefully with a piece of soft cardboard or your hands twice a day. This may sound strange, but research has proven that doing this will help your plants grow bigger than if they were not petted at all.

The hobby of organic gardening will take dedication, patience and a little bit of help from Mother Nature. However, the tastiness of the produce you grow will be a reward in itself. All it takes is a little studying and practice to become a successful organic gardener.
