Use this article to find some ideas on how to grow a better garden this year. Careful planning will help you assemble everything you need to grow a garden in your environment, and also avoid wasting money on the wrong seeds or unnecessary equipment.
Choose one plant and make it the focal point of your garden. In any great garden design, a good focal point captures the eye. More often than not, it is a plant that is distinctively different from its neighbors.
When fertilizing your garden, consider the benefits of a chicken tractor. Chicken tractors are moveable chicken coops with sheltered areas and open floors. The chickens can eat plant matter and insects, then the fertilizer is dropped right on the ground. Move the tractor to a new area of your garden once the area its in is sufficiently fertilized.
Cooling weather of early fall signals the opportune time to plant seasonal edibles. Try planting your fall veggies, especially leafy greens, inside of a pumpkin! Cut an opening in the pumpkin and scoop the insides out. Then spray the edges and empty inside of the pumpkin with Wilt-Pruf so the pumpkin doesn’t rot. After this is completed, it is time to plant!
Snails may be sprayed with an ammonia and water mixture. The ammonia will be converted to beneficial nitrogen and will not hurt your plants. To snails, though, ammonia is quite lethal. Spraying an ammonia solution around will deter them from doing any damage to your garden. For best results you’re going to want to use this mixture daily.
Consider planting trees that have colorful fruit in the fall months. The richly hued berries of these trees will add striking variety to your already beautiful fall foliage. Berries range in color from deep red to yellow, and last into the winter, offering some vibrant color, and also bird feed. Some good varieties to grow are hawthorn, holly, crabapple and chokeberry.
Put a couple of inches of organic mulch around each of your vegetable plants. The mulch will add beneficial moisture to your soil. It also helps prevent weeds from growing. You will be able to save the time you would spend watering your plants and pulling out weeds.
To keep dogs from disturbing your garden, spray some old aftershave, cologne, perfume or other strongly-scented products in the dirt or grass surrounding it. Doing so shields the scents that your dog might pick up on and be drawn to, causing their potential interest in your garden to drop dramatically.
When gardening, beware of stink bugs and other insects, particularly in the autumn. Stink bugs enjoy gardens, and are especially fond of fruit, tomatoes, beans and peppers. Decrease their presence as much as possible to avoid them wreaking havoc in your garden.
Use fertilizer for maximum planting success. Manure can be effective, though you should use products which minimize pathogens. You can choose from many different fertilizers. Do not worry about the kind of fertilizer you end up using but definitely put down something.
Having a good wheelbarrow and a kneeling stool makes garden chores a lot easier. Spending time on the ground is rough on the knees, a portable and light stool can help make gardening easier. Gardeners usually need a wheelbarrow to move the heavy dirt and other objects so they are a good item to buy.
All you need is a little homework, some work in the outdoors, and some patience. When you see your garden flourish, you will feel a satisfying sense of accomplishment.
