Plant a variety of annuals, biennials and perennials to keep your flower beds bright. Fast growing biennials and annuals will brighten a garden and permit you to change looks from one season to another. They can be used to fill in gaps in your garden between the perennials or shrubs so your garden looks fuller. Some of these that you might consider are petunias, marigolds and sunflowers. If those are not flowers you like, you can also try cosmos, holyhocks or rudbeckias.
There are grass varieties, such as wheat grass or catnip, that will give your feline something to nibble on besides your garden. Offensive smells also work to repel cats and other pesky animals from eating your plants. Try putting mothballs, citrus peels, garlic and other pungent items on the topsoil.
A chicken tractor works well to fertilize a future garden space. This is basically a chicken coop that moves, with sheltered area and open floor. This enables the chickens to munch on vegetation and bugs while depositing fertilizer. After an area is fertilized, pull the chicken tractor to a different area.
Clay soil makes working with a shovel difficult. The clay is hard and sticks to the shovel. Rub a thin layer of floor or car wax over the surface of the shovel, and then buff the surface using a clean cloth. This will make shoveling in clay soil easier. The clay will no longer stick to the shovel, and this also helps to prevent other problems like rusting.
Dwarf fruit trees make a lovely addition to a small garden. Urban gardens are typically small in area, but there is plenty of room for dwarf fruit trees, even if only one. These trees produce regular sized fruits and produce fruit after about four years from planting. Introduce a dormant tree to its new habitat in the early spring and make sure it is watered well.
