Great Gardening Tips For Any Skill Level

Play up autumn color in your landscaping. Some deciduous shrubs and trees have gorgeous foliage in the fall, turning red or orange and even yellow. The plants stop creating chlorophyll during this time of year, so any masked colors bloom once the green dies off. Ensure your plants receive plenty of sunshine to increase the display of fall colors. Some great shrubs to use are boston ivy, barberry, chestnut, and maple.

A great tip to consider when gardening is to make sure that you are not over or under watering your plants. If you over-water your plants you can cause root rot, which will kill your garden, likewise if you under-water the garden, you are in jeopardy of having dried up plants and soil. Remember to keep an eye on the moisture in your soil, and maintain it at the proper level.

Sod should be laid properly. Before you lay the sod, the soil has to be prepared. Be sure to get rid of any weeds, and then proceed to break up the soil to get it ready to use. Flatten the soil back into place, gently but firmly. Make sure the soil is thoroughly moist. Avoid laying your sod in straight rows with all of the seams lining up. Instead, stagger the rows for a more pleasing visual effect. Firm sod until there is an even, flat surface; fill in gaps with soil. Sod has to be watered daily for two weeks, and then it can be rooted.

If you are going to be doing some gardening, watch out for stink bugs, especially in the fall! They love to inhabit peppers, beans, tomatoes and all kinds of fruit varieties. Stink bugs may get out of hand and do significant damage in your garden. It is important to take steps to eliminate them from that area.

You should protect the knees if you are kneeling in the garden. Bending over for extended periods can be harmful to your joints and muscles. If you kneel, you can easily work on your plants without placing stress on your back. You can get a knee pad to place on the ground to kneel on so that you do not feel pain in your knees.

Clay soil makes working with a shovel difficult. The clay is hard and sticks to the shovel. To make working in clay easier, rub the shovel with floor or car wax and then buff it with a cloth. You will be able to work with the clay more easily, and it will not stick to your shovel.

Start brand new plants by using cuttings from existing plant roots. Cut the plant roots during winter, while they go dormant. Start by using a sharpened knife to separate the plant from the largest roots. Make two inch segments out of the roots. Place these cuttings on the surface of a seed tray that you have filled with grit and peat moss and water thoroughly. Cover this with a layer of planting soil. Place your seed tray in a cool location and new seedlings will appear in about a month’s time. Plant the seedlings separately in small containers until they are large enough to be planted outdoors.
