Gardening can be an extremely relaxing hobby, and one of the best things about it is that it is easy on the wallet. Family and friends can spend an enjoyable afternoon together, working in the garden. If you have kids, you will see that they will be fascinated by how seeds grow into flowers and vegetables. It is also a great lesson in life; it can really help you to appreciate nature and the outdoors. This article provides you with a variety of tactics and tips on making the most out of your gardening experience.
If your garden is small, consider planting one or more dwarf fruit trees. Urban gardens are typically small in area, but there is plenty of room for dwarf fruit trees, even if only one. These trees begin to bear fruit about 3 to 5 years after planting them, and produce fruit that is full size. Keep dormant trees abundantly watered after planting in the early spring.
Protect and define your garden with some type of border. Having something to keep the animals out of your garden is a good way to keep your plants safe while they are growing, in order to reach their full size.
A great gardening tip to implement is to actually create new plants for your garden by using root cuttings from existing plants. The roots are dormant in the winter, so that is when they should be cut. Cut off the thickest, longest roots of the plant with a sharp knife. Cut the roots into two inch lengths. Fill up a seed tray containing a mixture of grit and moist peat, then place the root cuttings right on top of the surface. Cover the roots with some grit and peat, make sure it is just a thin layer. Store the seed tray in a cool area, and in approximately one month, your new seedlings will have started to sprout. Plant them separately inside of small pots until it is time to plant them outdoors.
When autumn has arrived, you must plant everything you want to eat before winter. This year, instead of using your regular clay pots to plant your kale and lettuce, use a pumpkin as the container instead! Once you cut an opening at the top of the pumpkin and scoop out the insides, spray the inside and edges with Wilt-Pruf to keep the pumpkin from rotting. Now you can use the pumpkin as a planter.
