Some houseplants can’t survive without humidity. This can be achieved by putting several plants in a single pot, or surrounding a single plant with stones and compost in a pot larger than it would otherwise require. In addition, using a spray bottle to spray a light mist over the houseplants one or two times daily can create humidity, too.
Fill your garden with bulbs if you want to enjoy beautiful flowers through the spring and into summer. Most bulbs are extremely hearty and grow easily. They also come back year after year. Specific types of bulbs usually bloom at specific times of the season, so if you make appropriate selections, you can be rewarded with blooms from the early part of spring to the later part of summer.
Use root cuttings to create beautiful new plants. Wait until winter when the roots are dormant before cutting them. Choose the thickest roots that have a good length and, using a sharp knife, remove them from the plant. Once you have harvested several large roots, divide them into two inch cuttings. Fill up a seed tray containing a mixture of grit and moist peat, then place the root cuttings right on top of the surface. Cover the roots with an additional layer of grit and peat. Leave the tray in a cool area, and seedlings will sprout in approximately a month. Transplant the cuttings to small pots, and allow them to grow a little prior to planting them outside.
There are home solutions available to combat the powdery mildew you may find on your plants. Combine a bit of liquid soap and some baking soda with water. This solution can be sprayed onto your plants once per week until the problem is resolved. Do not worry about your plants; the baking soda cannot harm them.
