While some people believe gardening takes too much hard work to be worth it, the truth is that a little knowledge goes a long way to making it easy, fun and fruitful. Prepare your seeds by soaking them in a dark environment. Put a few seeds in a small container and fill it near to the top with water. This way, your seeds are well-hydrated and can start growing with a head start. This way, the seeds you have planted will have some chance of growing.

Slug-proof your garden with smart perennial choices. Snails and slugs can do irreparable damage to your garden in a single night. These pests prefer plants with thin smooth leaves. Plant some helleborus or euphorbias along with your other perennials. Slugs and snails will leave some perennials alone, particularly those with a bad taste or tough, hairy leaves. Examples of these include euphorbia, hellebourus and achillea. Others you may want to consider are campanula and heuchera.

You can use boiling water to get rid of weeds naturally. Boiling water can be considered as an herbicide, and it is a safe one. Although this method is organic, it does pose a danger to your plants. The water will kill the weeds by destroying the roots and if poured directly on the weeds, will prevent them from growing back.

Consider planting evergreens that produce berries in your yard. These plants will look good year-round, even during the winter, when your other plants have lost their bloom. Some evergreens that will add life to your yard in the wintertime are the American Cranberrybush, Common Snowberry, Winterberry, and American holly.

To remove deposits of salt from clay pots, use a mixture of vinegar and alcohol. As plants grow inside clay pots, they deposit salt on the outside of the pot. Mix a solution of water, white vinegar, and rubbing alcohol, all in equal parts, and spray the pot with it. Scrub lightly and you will see the salt begin to disappear. Be sure to rinse the mixture off the pot and allow it to become thoroughly dry before reusing it.
