Don’t use broad-spectrum pesticides for your garden. Broad-spectrum pesticides will kill insects that are helpful to your garden as well as the harmful ones. Useful insects are more sensitive to these pesticides than the pests, so by killing them, you could be growing your pest population. If this happens, you just fuel an expanding cycle of needing even more pesticides.
Before you begin to plant a garden, it is important to build a border fence circling your garden. Plants that grow up in a secure and well-defended garden will be safe from the depredations of animals, and have a chance to grow as large as possible.
When fertilizing your garden, consider the benefits of a chicken tractor. When it comes to a chicken tractor, it is basically a chicken coop that is moveable with a sheltered area and an open floor. The chickens are able to feast on the bugs and vegetation as they deposit fertilizer. Since the area is portable, it can be moved around in different areas.
Increase your property value with landscaping. Landscaping provides some of the best home improvement returns. There are some varieties of plants that increase property values by over 20%. Select plants and shrubs that won’t require a lot of ongoing maintenance and will adapt well to your climate.
Using natural materials in the garden will keep pests away. For example, if you plant onions or marigolds along the edges of your vegetable garden, you can ward off slugs. You can also prevent insect pests by using wood ash like mulch around your trees and shrubs. By utilizing these methods, you will not have to apply chemical pesticides on your vegetation.
If you have salt spots on your clay pots, try using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and vinegar. When you have a plant in a clay pot, unsightly salt deposits can build up on the outside over time. Mix water, white vinegar and rubbing alcohol in equal parts, and spray the combination on the pot. Then scrub it with a plastic cleaning brush, and watch the salt melt away. When finished, rinse the pot off thoroughly and set to dry prior to planting your next plant in it.
A simple way to raise up the plant material layers for the compost pile is to store the material in big plastic garbage bags. This is possible in autumn after raking your leaves. Make sure to put the bag somewhere warm. When spring comes, it’s perfect soil for your compost pile.
Try dousing weeds in your garden with boiling water to get rid of them. Boiling water in a pot is a safe “herbicide.” Pour boiling water on any weeds, but be careful not to spill it on plants you want to keep. Boiling water damages the weed roots and will inhibit future growth.
Irises can be easily divided. You can divide those overgrown clumps and increase the amount of irises you have. When the foliage has died off, it is time to harvest the iris bulbs. The bulbs will split up naturally in your hand, and when replanted, will often flower the next year. You should split up rhizomes by utilizing a blade. Cut healthy pieces from the root stalk and throw out the dead center. Each piece should have at least one strong offshoot. The quicker you can replant your cuttings, the better chances they will reappear next season.
