Several annuals grow better in the colder months. For great looking plants, try pruning them if they get too leggy. In less than a month, pruned annuals bloom yet again, providing a rich and vibrant contrast to the usual array of full winter colors. Annual plants that flourish in cold weather are snapdragons, petunias and dianthus.
Sensibly water your garden. A soaker hose can save valuable time by watering all of your plants simultaneously, removing the need for hauling a watering can or hose around to each plant. Keep the water running slowly so it doesn’t spray up onto the plants’ leaves. Keep the water turned on for about two hours; while your plants are being watered, you will have time for other activities.
To deter meddlesome dogs from destroying your garden, you should use heavily scented substances around the perimeter. You can even use perfume! This will mask the garden smell that is attracting your dog, and it will make it a less appealing place for your dog to visit.
Keep your clay plots bright and clean by removing salt deposits with a solution of rubbing alcohol, water and vinegar. The salt deposits build up in clay pots where the plant sat outside for a while. Combine equal parts water, rubbing alcohol and white vinegar and spray that on the pot. After spraying, scrub your pot with a kitchen brush. The salt will soon be gone. When finished, rinse the pot off thoroughly and set to dry prior to planting your next plant in it.
Try dividing the irises. If you split up clumps of them, you will eventually have more of this flower. When foliage is dead, lift bulbous irises. The bulbs often divide in your hand with no intervention on your part, and when you replant them, they will usually flower the following year. For plants with rhizomes, use a knife to divide them. Cut the new pieces from its outside and dispose of the older center. Every piece should contain a strong offshoot. Replant your cuttings immediately for the best results.
