Custom 24’ x 24’ Freestanding Cantilever Patio Cover and Outdoor Kitchen in Las Vegas
Outdoor living projects do not always fit into a standard patio cover package. Sometimes the design calls for larger spans, fewer posts, heavier structural components, and a completely custom approach to construction.
This 24’ x 24’ freestanding cantilever patio cover was designed and built to create a massive covered outdoor entertainment area while maintaining an open, modern appearance around the outdoor kitchen below.
The goal was simple: create a large covered patio without filling the space with unnecessary posts and structural obstructions.
Achieving that goal required a much more substantial structural system.
A Large Freestanding Patio Cover Designed Around the Outdoor Living Space
At approximately 24 feet by 24 feet, this custom patio cover creates nearly 576 square feet of covered outdoor living space.
Rather than attaching the structure directly to the home, the patio cover was designed as a freestanding structure. This allowed the cover to be positioned specifically around the outdoor kitchen and entertainment area while creating a dramatic architectural feature in the backyard.
One of the most noticeable design elements is the large cantilever.
The structural beams extend approximately 12 feet beyond the supporting posts, creating a huge open area underneath the patio cover. By moving the structural posts away from the primary entertainment space, the outdoor kitchen and covered patio feel significantly more open.
There are fewer posts to walk around, fewer visual obstructions, and a much cleaner overall design.
Massive Concrete Footings for a Heavy-Duty Structure
Large cantilever patio covers require much more than simply installing oversized posts.
The structural loads have to be transferred into the ground.
For this project, large concrete foundations and footings were constructed to support the steel structure above. These foundations play an extremely important role in resisting the forces created by the long cantilevered beam sections.
The farther a structure extends beyond its support point, the more leverage and structural force is created.
This is why the foundation system is such an important part of a custom cantilever patio cover.
The parts of the project hidden underground can be just as important as the finished structure everyone sees above ground.
At Green Guru Landscaping, we place a major emphasis on structural integrity. Our custom outdoor structures are built around the requirements of the project rather than trying to force every backyard into the same standard patio cover design.
Heavy-Duty Steel Posts and Structural Beams
The massive cantilever design required a heavy-duty steel structural system.
Large steel posts and beams create the backbone of the patio cover and allow the roof structure to extend well beyond the supporting posts.
This type of construction provides opportunities that are difficult to achieve with a conventional aluminum patio cover system.
By incorporating structural steel, custom foundations, and project-specific design considerations, we can create wider post spacing and larger open areas underneath the patio cover.
For homeowners designing a luxury backyard, this can make a major difference.
An outdoor kitchen, dining table, television wall, bar area, or outdoor furniture layout should not have to be designed around inconvenient patio cover posts.
Whenever possible, we prefer to design the structure around the way the outdoor living space will actually be used.
Insulated Roof Panels for a More Comfortable Covered Patio
The roof of this custom patio cover incorporates insulated roof panels.
In the Las Vegas heat, the roof system above an outdoor living area is an important design consideration.
An insulated patio cover roof provides a substantial overhead structure while helping create a more comfortable shaded environment underneath the cover.
The clean appearance of the insulated roof panels also complements the modern structural design of the patio cover.
Combined with the large steel structure and dramatic cantilever, the finished roof creates the appearance of a massive floating outdoor cover extending over the entertainment space.
A Custom Outdoor Kitchen Built Below the Patio Cover
The patio cover was designed in conjunction with a large custom outdoor kitchen and entertainment area below.
This is where integrated outdoor living design becomes extremely important.
Instead of treating the patio cover and outdoor kitchen as two unrelated projects, the entire area can be considered as one outdoor environment.
The position of the structural posts, roof coverage, kitchen layout, countertop space, walking areas, and entertainment zones all affect one another.
By planning these elements together, we can create outdoor living spaces that feel intentional rather than assembled one component at a time.
The large cantilevered roof provides extensive coverage over the outdoor kitchen while allowing the primary usable space to remain open.
The result is a massive covered backyard entertainment area designed for cooking, gathering, relaxing, and enjoying the backyard.
Custom Patio Cover Solutions With Fewer Posts and Wider Spans
One of the most common concerns homeowners have when considering a large patio cover is the number and location of the posts.
Standard patio cover layouts may require support posts in locations that interfere with the overall backyard design.
For certain projects, custom steel construction may provide additional design possibilities.
Larger structural beams, heavy-duty steel posts, substantial concrete foundations, and custom structural planning can allow us to explore wider post spacing and cantilevered designs.
Every project is different, and structural requirements will depend on the size, layout, engineering, and site conditions.
However, if you are designing a high-end backyard and do not like the idea of patio cover posts interrupting your outdoor kitchen or entertainment area, there may be custom solutions available.
