When you are gardening out in the sun, wear the proper clothing so that you do not get any type of sun damage. This includes wide-brimmed hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses. When using the right protection in the sun, you will lower your chance of getting a sunburn and decrease your risk of getting skin cancer.
Protect your deciduous shrubs which are tender. If you have tender shrubs in pots, they need to be protected in the cold weather. Tie the tops tightly together, and cover the wigwam with a sheet or blanket draped loosely over it. This is more effective than putting plastic on the plant, it will let the air flow.
Be vigilant about keeping moisture off your plants. Damp leaves can lead to plant disease and parasites. A common parasite found in the plant kingdom is fungi. You can control fungi with fungicides, but you must remember to use it before you notice any problems in order for it to work.
Heather is a magnet for friendly insects. Bees are naturally attracted to heather for its nectar. If your heather bed is undisturbed, as it would be in nature, many beneficial insects will make it their home. Always remember this, and wear your gardening gloves if you prune your heather!
Choose plants that will give you the most yield at harvest time. A disease-resistant hybrid plant can be a good option to consider over a more traditional variety due to its tendency to produce higher yields.
Always fertilize your garden. Manure can help grow plants, but to eliminate risk of pathogens, try using a type of commercially composted product. There are numerous types of fertilizers available. What type you select is less of a concern; any kind of fertilizer is better than none.
To make it easier for large trees or shrubs to develop good root systems, plant them in the fall. Since the ground is still warm compared to the air temperature and the plants do not have leaves to grow and support it, their resources will be concentrated in the root system, thus creating a strong foundation.
