Learn the best harvesting time for each kind of vegetable you plant. There is a specific time to pick every sort of vegetable in order to maximize its taste and cooking utility. Some vegetables are best when fully ripe and others taste better when harvested early in their development. Tomatoes, however, are best picked from the vine later when they are very ripe. You should know the proper time to pick vegetables.
When gardening, try not to use broad-spectrum pesticides. While broad-spectrum pesticides will kill most pests, they will also kill helpful insects. Bugs that are good for your garden tend to be more susceptible to these types of pesticides, and using them could mean an increase in the pests you are actually trying to get rid of. As a result, gardeners often have to resort to using more toxic pesticides to get rid of garden pests.
Be smart about how you water your garden. Use a type of soaker hose so that you don’t need to do individual waterings with the hose nozzle, or be refilling a watering can constantly. Be sure to keep the pressure of the water on low so that the hose does not damage the tender plants. You can take care of other tasks or just relax while your plants are automatically watered for an hour or so.
The prevent your dog from trampling through your garden, spray some old aftershave, perfume or other heavily scented things on the grass around your plants. This will mask any scents that might attract your dog and make your garden less interesting to him.
