Get Great Gardening Advice With These Handy Tips

One good way to create layers for a compost pile is to add plant materials to big plastic bags. You can do this during the fall once the leaves have been raked. The bagged leaves should be stored in a warm area over winter. In the spring, your leaves will be a good addition for your compost pile.

Any time that you are gardening in direct sunlight, dress appropriately to prevent skin damage. Make sure you wear a wide brimmed hat along with sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen. When you keep your eyes and skin properly protected, you are less likely to get a sunburn. You also lower your risk in developing cancer of the skin.

A great garden starts from the seeds and not from the plants. When opening a garden, the most green method of beginning is from seed. It’s better for your garden, in particular, because transplants have high failure rates; whereas, sprouting a seed and growing a plant in the same conditions is better. Additionally, it’s better for the environment, because the plastic pots used by most greenhouses are generally not recycled and are cluttering landfills.

Plant bulbs in your garden if you want flowers through spring and summer. Most bulbs are extremely hearty and grow easily. They also come back year after year. Different varieties of bulbs flower at varied times and if you make the right choices you can have blossoms from early spring through late summer.

When planting seeds, it is wise to take your time. Begin by adding moisture to the soil. Space the seeds at regular intervals to ensure that they won’t be overcrowded as they grow. Bury your seeds about three times deeper than the size that they are. It isn`t necessary to bury all seeds; some of them need light for growth to occur.

Always have a plan for the garden prior to the start of planting it. This way, when the sprouts start shooting up, you can recall where you planted each plant. You might end up losing small plants in a large area, because you did not water them.

Get more plants by cutting the roots of existing plants. Cut the plant roots during winter, while they go dormant. A good knife should be sufficient for removing the deepest roots. Separate the roots into cuts of about 2 inches each. Place the cuttings on top of a seed tray that you have filled with a blend of damp peat and grit. Cover the roots with an additional layer of grit and peat. Place your seed tray in a cool location and new seedlings will appear in about a month’s time. Remember to plant your seedlings separately, you want them to be ready in small pots and when they develop put them outside.
